Investing.

March 7, 2013

In business and in life you can choose to rest and take YOU time or you can get caught in a rat race of trying to be someone else, trying to always be ahead of the game. In my almost two years of business one of the biggest things I’ve learned is to be me. To not be concerned with what others are doing, but to observe and take notes. I’ve discovered opening up facebook first thing in the morning and checking what other photographers are doing is not how I need to start my day.

Instead I need to invest in myself. This could look like taking an extra 30 minutes to relax drinking my coffee, reading a good book, journaling.  Then once my needs have been taken care of invest in my clients and most importantly (in the business part) invest into my talents and giftings. Investing in your business doesn’t always look like purchasing ad space, marketing, doing booths at shows. While those can be great tools. Investing in your talents and your ability to do what you do is key. There is always room to get better, to learn, to stretch yourself out of your comfort zone.

The image on this post is from a shoot I did two nights ago. I wanted to stretch myself and play with some lights and and flash. I typically shoot during the daytime with the sun as my main light source. Sure I know how to use my flash at a wedding, and enjoyed playing around with it here and there. But I purposefully choose to get out of my comfort zone. I choose to invest in my talents and giftings. And you know what? It was fun. It is not a style of shooting that I see myself doing alot. BUT, I learned something new. And it brought joy to what I do. It re-inspired me. So my challenge to you if you are a photographer is to invest in yourself. If you aren’t a photographer and you are a client I want to challenge you to invest in yourself still. What are giftings, talents, loves that you enjoy? Have you spent all your time focused on the idea of doing it or have you put it into motion? I would love to hear how you took your ideas and made them a reality!

Until next time.
